5 Things To Know About Hijab-Wearing Model Halima Aden

Halima Aden, 19, wowed social media users after images were released of the beauty walking in Kanye West's highly anticipated Yeezy Season 5 show. Here's what to know about the budding fashion star who is challenging stereotypes on and off the runway.

1. She's already caught the eye of top fashion editors.

The model’s first print editorial will be revealed in the March issue of CR Fashion Book, the brainchild of former Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld. Preview images reveal Aden wearing a Celine blazer. The feature was shot by famed fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti.

2. She competed in a Miss Minnesota pageant.

Aden made national headlines after rocking braces, a hijab and a burkini while competing for the title of Miss Minnesota, a subsidiary of the Miss USA pageants. Donald Trump was the owner of the pageants from 1996 to 2015, and they were later acquired by WME/IMG.

3. She was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and is a Somali-American.

"I didn't really have modeling in mind," says Aden, "I wanted to spread a positive message about beauty and diversity, to show other young Muslim women that there is room for them," she told Business of Fashion. While there's little information on how Aden immigrated to the U.S., she is a Minnesota resident and an American citizen.

4. She's newly signed to IMG Models.

Aden’s joining the ranks of mega models Bella and Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen and Gisele in IMG Models' Women division.

5. She's taking social media by storm.

Gigi Hadid instagrammed her, and the Women’s March tweeted that she’s “the future of fashion." Aden is quickly being idolized by young fans on social media. Almost immediately after the show, Aden trended on Twitter in New York, and images spread like wildfire on Instagram. Expect to see more of the young beauty in the future.

Fair Dealing’ in a Digital World

Our appetite for data has, arguably, never been greater. The advent of mobile technology has only fueled that appetite by allowing us to consume increasing amounts of data on the move thanks to our smartphones and tablets. For many of us, our smartphone is our primary source of data. A recent survey found that 82% of smartphone owners check them within one hour of waking up, and that smartphones are the primary source of news for 42% of users between ages 25 and 34.

Because of the ease with which we can stream data to our mobile devices, we are increasingly demanding ‘data experiences.’ For example, it is not enough for us to just read about some breaking news. We also want a visual experience; we want to see it happening.

It is perhaps not surprising then that news content providers – such as newspaper publishers and other media organizations – are adapting how they deliver content to us to keep pace with the smartphone revolution. In many cases, they can no longer just provide a written feature on a newsworthy item. It must also be supported by visual content.

To satisfy this need, news content providers are, increasingly, including ‘clips’ with their online offering. A ‘clip’ is a twenty second or so extract from television, film or online footage which exemplifies the content of a written feature. It shows the very moment that the goal was scored, the hurricane struck or the politician made (yet another) gaffe.

These clips are usually taken from third party footage. So the provider might take a clip from BBC news footage, for example. The BBC owns the copyright in its footage and so, absent a legal justification, taking and using the clip (without the BBC’s express permission) would be copyright infringement. However, the clip could be used if the provider can rely on an ‘exception’ to copyright. One such exception is ‘fair dealing.’

Fair dealing is, in essence, a defense to copyright infringement. It allows you to copy part of a (usually already published) third party copyright work without having to get the copyright owner’s prior permission. For example, it would allow you to copy a short passage from a book, to reproduce a photograph or other image, or to use clips from television, film or online footage. You are not required to make any payment to the copyright owner in return for use of their material. You do not need to let the copyright owner know what you are doing and you can go ahead even if the copyright owner is aware of what you are doing and objects. It is irrelevant whether you are acting in a commercial or non-commercial context.

Melissa McCarthy Mocks Ivanka Trump’s Split With Nordstrom on ‘SNL’ in the Best Way

To no one’s surprise, Melissa McCarthy delivered another uproarious “Saturday Night Live” impersonation as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

The NBC sketch series spoofed President Donald Trump’s communications honcho and skewered the commander-in-chief’s recent Twitter tirade chiding Nordstrom for dumping his daughter Ivanka’s namesake brand.

With full Spicer-esque bravado, McCarthy slammed the press for ignoring acts of “terrorism” in a media conference, mocking reports on how retailers have affected his daughter’s business.

“This week when Nordstrom decided to stop selling Ivanka Trump’s line of clothing and accessories,” McCarthy said, “That’s Nordstrom’s loss. In fact, I’m wearing one of her bangles now.”

With deadpan delivery, McCarthy added: “It’s shimmery, elegant and at $39.99 it’s affordable.”

The shameless plug continued with QVC-like graphics and another call to attention on Ivanka Trump’s footwear brand.

“And don’t let me get started on her shoes — because these babies are a head-turner,” McCarthy quipped, propping a foot up to reveal a graphic-print heel.

The comedy bit comes after President Trump slammed Nordstrom on Twitter for its decision to pull the brand, citing its poor performance: “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by ‪@Nordstrom,” he tweeted Wednesday. “She is a great person — always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!”

From a raw food fast and juice detox, to a calorie-light, vegan-friendly diet, we trial the best food delivery companies to help you clean up your body and eating habits

Great for... Mindful Chef's raison d'etre is all in the name- making us think through the food we're feeding ourselves. To that end, the service is a brilliant reminder that preparing a meal truly from scratch can be a soothing and actually-not-too-difficult process. Of course, they make it infinitely easier by providing all the ingredients ready weighed out for you, just chopping and cooking required.

Hunger factor: Minimal. I tried the two-person package, sharing two of the three meals with my boyfriend then having the leftovers of the third one for my lunch the next day, a practice I'd definitely recommend, even if you are signing up just for yourself. The portions seemed generous and the recipes all contained some form of healthy grain to keep hunger at bay.

Flavour ranking: Excellent, all the recipes contained delicious, flavour-rich ingredients like paprika or garlic. Although I'm not a vegan I was fascinated to try nutritional yeast which added a lovely cheesy taste to the buckwheat risotto.

Weight loss: That wasn't the aim for me but I certainly felt less bloated after eating the Mindful Chef recipes than I do after my usual bowl of pesto pasta. With plenty of hearty vegetables and sensible amounts of unrefined carbs, the meals are a no-brainer way to a healthier dinner.

Skin-boosting: I didn't test them for long enough to notice a discernible difference.

Energy levels: Excellent. The moderate portions of slow-release carbs meant I didn't suffer the all-too-common, give-me-sugar afternoon slump when I ate the meals for lunch.

Logistical ease: The delivery system was excellent; the box containing everything I would need was left outside my house on Monday morning, in time for me to come home and cook on Monday evening. Perhaps the only downside was the amount of packaging but this is the sacrifice you make for the ease of the concept and thankfully most of it was recyclable.

Difficulty rating: If you're in search of a no-fuss way to eat healthily then this, quite frankly, is not it. Although each meal came packaged in cleverly colour coded bags with all the ingredients pre-weighed, there was still a significant amount of cooking and chopping to get through. I'd say that you need between 30 and 45 minutes clear to prepare each meal. But I really appreciated the care and attention which this forced me to give my dinner. While I do often cook from scratch already, Mindful Chef made me consider different ingredients which take a little longer to prepare. An added bonus? Chopping a huge butternut squash into cubes was a seriously good arm toning opportunity.

Here's How New York Fashion Week Will Raise Awareness About Planned Parenthood

CFDA, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, is partnering with Planned Parenthood.

On Monday, the non-profit trade organization announced that it's launching the Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood campaign to raise awareness about the health care organization at New York Fashion Week, which kicks off Thursday.

The CFDA has created a special bright pink pin, designed by The Creative Group Conde Nast, that will be distributed to designers, models, industry influencers, press, front-row attendees and more attending NYFW. Designer Tracy Reese, one of the CFDA's board members, is leading the initiative. More than 40 designers, including Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Zac Posen and Prabal Gurung, are taking part in the campaign.

"We know that so many people stand with Planned Parenthood — including designers and entertainers — because they and their loved ones have relied on Planned Parenthood for health care, including life-saving care like cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing and treatment and sex education," said Reese. "Planned Parenthood is often the only option for this type of care in underserved communities. By creating a visually engaging and fashionable pin, we hope to create an organic social media movement promoting awareness and education."

The pin will come with an information card outlining how participants can get involved and stand with Planned Parenthood. Folks are also encouraged to take a picture wearing the pin and share it with their followers using the hashtag #IStandwithPP.

"Planned Parenthood has stood defiantly in the face of opposition for a century, and we're not backing down now," said Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "The American people overwhelmingly support our organization and strongly oppose 'defunding' care at our health centers. Planned Parenthood’s millions of supporters, including the CFDA, are mobilizing to protect access to reproductive health and rights for everyone, including the 2.5 million patients we serve, and we will continue to fight to ensure that all people can get the care they need."

The move comes at a time when Donald Trump has pledged to sign a bill de-funding Planned Parenthood if it reaches his desk. Republicans have long targeted the health care group for providing abortions.

Award season is upon us which means that we not only have tons of beauty inspiration from our favourite celebrities but also stunning sartorial choices that will define trends for spring/summer. We round up our favourite red carpet looks this week, locally and internationally. If there’s one thing certain, shimmer and shine is here to stay.

    Mawra Hocane

Hocane rocked a fire engine red creation from couture maestros Sana Safinaz to the Ms. Veet finale. The single shoulder silhouette, featuring a gigantic flower on the bodice looks effortless on the younger Hocane sibling but take it from us, it’s extremely hard to pull off without the bodice embellishment overwhelming the wearer. Hocane’s minimal yet classic styling, credited to Mavi Kiyani, helped ensure that she looked like a superstar in the ensemble. Definitely one of our favourite red carpet moments to emerge from the local fashion scene this year.

    Amna Baber

New year, same great style. Baber never ever gets it wrong and proves why she’s worth top dollar; put the model in any outfit and she’ll rock it. Obviously then when Baber wears a designer as accomplished as Feeha Jamshed, she knocks it out of the park. We love everything about her look: the short cropped hair, shades and the ice blue shade of her jumpsuit. Special shout out to Jamshed for the fabulously embellished pant cuffs. Take a page out of Baber’s book ladies, keep it simple when trying to make a statement.

    Nicole Kidman

Seriously, do actors never age? Kidman doesn’t look anywhere near 50 and we want to know what secret youth regenerating foods she eats. But apart from looking like she hasn’t aged a day in decades, Kidman also wears one of our absolutely favourite looks from the award season. From the brilliant, emerald green of the gown to the feather and sequin parrot embellishment on her shoulders (oh hello ‘80s, welcome back) to her peachy makeup, Kidman looked phenomenal at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

    Evan Rachel Wood

We have to be honest, up until Westworld we weren’t particularly convinced about Wood’s acting chops. Not only did Wood prove all detractors incorrect with her nuanced performance on the show, she’s been turning up to red carpets this year looking like a boss. Wood has consistently rocked suits for award season and her recent Altuzarra velvet suit was a winner. Slick hair, bold lips and oodles of attitude helped Wood carry off her impeccably tailored navy tuxedo with panache.

    Claire Foy

Award season usually means that you see celebrities in beautiful but un-innovative attire. There’s the usual plethora of classically cut gowns in solid shades which are great for decoding the colour palette for the season but their looks leave a lot to be desired. Foy’s dreamy, ethereal red carpet choice not only breaks away from the structured gowns but also wins for being incredibly detailed. A black tulle overlay embroidered with delicate white flowers and a baby doll collar allow hints of her pale pink body suit beneath to peak through. J’adore!

Lily Collins may often be applauded for her impeccable style on the red carpet, but that's not the only thing earning the actress recognition when it comes to clothes.

The Costume Designers Guild on Monday announced that Collins will receive the Lacoste Spotlight Award, which "honors an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design," according to a release.

Collins last attended the Costume Designers Guild Awards in 2013, when she stepped out in a Paule Ka gown with an oversize bow in the back that was a tribute to the late Mirror Mirror costume designer Eiko Ishioka, who died of pancreatic cancer at age 73 the year before. Ishioka, who won an Oscar for best costume design for Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), won a CDGA for excellence in fantasy film the year that Collins attended the ceremony.

Collins most recently starred in Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination — her first — for best actress in a musical or comedy. The 27-year-old star's upcoming projects include To the Bone (which just premiered at Sundance), The Last Tycoon and Okja. In addition to film and TV, Collins also has penned her first memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me (HarperCollins), which is due out March 7.

Previous Lacoste Spotlight Award honorees include Cate Blanchett, Amy Adams and Naomi Watts.

The 19th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards will be held Feb. 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Ivanka Trump Looks to Oscar de la Renta for First Inaugural Outfits

On Thursday evening, Ivanka Trump stepped out in a gown designed by an American legacy brand: Oscar de la Renta, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Before heading out to the candlelit dinner at Union Station with husband Jared Kushner, the new first daughter took to her social media channels to post photos of herself in a sleeveless white gown with a wide black belt that wrapped into a big bow in the back. She styled the elegant ensemble with a chignon.

Ivanka also opted for de la Renta earlier in the day. She wore an emerald-green coat and top that was paired paired with nude pumps and oversize sunglasses.

De la Renta is a longtime bipartisan designer, having dressed former first ladies from both sides of the political spectrum, including Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.

Meanwhile, Melania Trump wore designs by New York-based Norisol Ferrari and Reem Acra on Thursday. Today, the new first lady stepped out in Ralph Lauren after much speculation.
